SLU Alumna Achieves National Board Certification
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) announced January 8, 2007 that Lorien R. Eck (M. Ed. 2006) has achieved National Board Certification in visual arts. Ms. Eck is an art teacher at John Muir Middle School in Los Angeles, California. She is among almost 7,800 teachers across the US who achieved national board certification in 2006. NBPTS has issued national certification to over 55,000 US teachers since its inception 20 years ago. It contniues to be the most thoroughly grounded, in research terms, of any
assessment program in the teaching profession, and it has subjected itself to a
higher standard of research and validation than any other professional board in
the United States. Ms. Eck completed her initial teacher preparation work at St. Lawrence in 2000-2001. A part of her continued M. Ed. studies at St. Lawrence involved the completion of the NBPTS portfolio, a two-year undertaking that many teachers consider to be among the most demanding and beneficial professional development activities of their careers. The City of Los Angeles also honored Ms. Eck in 2005-2006 with one of its Teacher of the Year awards. SLU congratulates Lorien Eck on her accomplishments as a teaching professional!
