St. Lawrence University: Education Department

Carey Southwick-Fink

Carey Southwick-Fink serves as the coordinator for the Tech Prep Program; a cooperative learning partnership between St. Lawrence University, Massena Central School, and several of St. Lawrence County’s most influential corporations and community organizations. The goal of the partnership is to enrich education by combining traditional instruction with experiential learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom and into the community.

The Tech Prep Program; a product of the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act; is designed to help secondary students gain the academic knowledge and technical skills necessary to gain access to higher education, advanced postsecondary training, or high skill employment. In the program, Massena juniors and seniors enroll in specialized math, technology, and English classes that work with local businesses to solve business-related problems as a part of their coursework. The Massena students often earn college-level credit for their coursework through Paul Smiths College in Paul Smiths, NY.

Carey also serves as an adjunct lecturer for the Education Department, teaching courses in Management of Tech Prep Programs and Principles of Secondary Teaching. She received both her B.A. and M.Ed. from St. Lawrence University and has considerable work experience in the fields of education and business. She resides in Rensselaer Falls with her husband Evan and their daughter, Sarah.
